Our melanin speaks volumes and I no longer want to hide in the shadows but instead showcase and embrace my complexion and culture as it is

PUBLISHED & EXHIBITED AT THE ALIENATED MAGAZINE WALES

Infinite shade of drape

As a fashion designer, I draw inspiration from my environment. I wanted my collection to reflect the society I grew up in and most importantly represent the women in my life. I created a collection that reflects the true representation of Sri Lankan beauty, a representation of all dark skin South Asian girls. Our melanin speaks volumes and I no longer want to hide in the shadows but instead showcase and embrace my complexion and culture as it is. I wish this collection to uplift and celebrate all shades of beauty as we practise self-love and learn to accept each other. Colourism is a true factor and a constant reminder to many South Asian girls who struggle to accept their darker complexion due to society's pressure to lighten their complexion.
